Impactful Footprint
We’ve been welcomed to Accra, Ghana and now it is time for Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. to make an impact. Some may have thought, the 300+ members and guests went all the way across the Atlantic to party and see what #DettyDecember was all about, but we also went to make a meaningful impact to several organizations.
On Christmas Day, we traveled to Dodowa, a town in Greater Accra Region to visit the Potter’s Village. This organization was founded by the late Dr. Mrs. Jane Irina Adu to house women and children in need. While at the organization, some of the children performed for us and then we took a tour of some of the new buildings that Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was able to fund through our partner foundation, SPEAR. The need of the organization was more facilities for washrooms and showers for the residents; therefore, the funding went to build 6 additional washrooms and showers. Another need that was fulfilled while we were there was a technology lab, it was outfitted with desks and computers for the students.
Another place that received renovated washrooms was the Cape Coast Dungeons. Throughout the trip, executive leaders traveled around to different regions making monetary donations to various organizations that aligned with the mission of the sorority.
The highest-ranked undergraduate, Samariah Robinson, started a campaign, EmpowerHer, to raise awareness of menstrual insecurity. With the help of SPEAR and other chapters, reusable sanitary items were collected and distributed to various organizations across the country so young girls wouldn’t miss days of school because of their cycle. My chapter donated over 100 items to this campaign.
It is a blessing to make an impact!
It’s always great to experience new destinations and activities but leaving your footprint in an impactful way tops it all.
